Baseball

Griff McGarry ’17 was drafted by the Washington Nationals from the Philadelphia Phillies in the Rule 5 draft in December. In 2025, the right-handed pitcher had a 3.44 ERA in 21 appearances as a starter from Single-A to Triple-A in the Phillies affiliates after he missed nearly six weeks in the spring due to an elbow injury. He had a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.53 (124 strikeouts and 49 walks) over 83 2/3 innings. At Triple-A Lehigh Valley, McGarry made his final start of the season, allowing one run on one hit and two walks in five innings. The Phils honored McGarry with the Paul Owens Award as the organization’s top minor league pitcher.

MLB

… Kiefer Lord ’20 returned late in the Baltimore Orioles’ Class-A Delmarva season after Tommy John surgery, appearing in three games. In his final outing September 3, he pitched 3.2 innings, allowing an earned run on three hits, striking out six, and walking none. He threw 61 pitches, a season-high 68 percent for strikes, and, according to a reporter, touched 97 mph.

Women’s Cross Country

Charlotte Tomkinson ’20, a grad student at Georgetown and Duke alum, placed 10th overall at the Mid-Atlantic Regional with a time of 19:48.5. She finished seventh at the Big East Championship, earning All-Conference First-Team recognition, and was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Region team, recognizing the top cross country athletes, typically for ranking in the top five within a geographical region for a specific season. Tomkinson closed her season at the NCAA Championships as the third finisher for Georgetown, which took 14th in the team race.

Men’s Cross Country

Cornell senior Kamran Murray ’21 finished in 26:32.8 in the 8k at the Ivy Championships as the Big Red placed third. He took 14th at the Cornell Opener to start the season.

… Cal junior Justin Pretre ’23 competed in five meets and posted a personal-best 30:36.5 in the 10k at the NCAA West Regionals as the Bears’ top men’s finisher. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country Performer of the Week after winning the 8k race at the Kim Duyst Twilight invitational with a personal-best time of 24:07.9. Pretre also won the 8k race at the USF Invitational with a time of 24:09.8.

… Joshua Benyo Baker ’25 was Grinnell College’s 10th finisher at the Wartburg Regional and ran an 8k in 28:07.5 at the Midwest Conference Championships in his rookie season.

Football

University of Southern California receiver Jaden Richardson ’20 posted 12 catches for 148 yards, including a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch, in a close loss to Texas Tech in the Alamo Bowl. After a four-year career at Tufts University, where he was named to the Div. III All-American team, Richardson spent two seasons with the USC Trojans as a graduate student. … Ben Banatao ’22 caught 12 passes for 150 yards as a senior receiver for Trinity College, which went 7-2 and shared the NESCAC conference title with Wesleyan University. … Sergio Beltran ’22 finished his four-year career as a three-way threat for Bates. He compiled 90 receptions for 971 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 95 yards in 24 carries. Beltran, a team captain, completed 8 of 11 passes for 108 yards this season and had 96 yards rushing and 62 receiving yards for the Bobcats.

… Senior running back Tyler Flynn ’22 rushed for 175 yards on 60 carries in helping Wesleyan to a 7-2 overall record and a share of the NESCAC conference title. He finished a three-year career with 724 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

… Carter Jung ’22 caught 54 passes for 714 yards as a senior receiver for Amherst College. He finished his four-year career with 122 receptions for 1,568 yards and 13 touchdowns. Jung also served as a kick returner for the Mammoths, totaling 47 kick returns for 1,114 yards. … Johns Hopkins University receiver Robby Enright ’23 caught 47 passes for 647 yards, second-most on the team, and posted eight touchdowns as the Jays closed the season with a narrow loss in the NCAA Div. III semifinals, finishing with a 12-2 record.

Amherst Athletics

… In his first season after transferring from Tufts, Ty Richardson ’23 ended the season with 29 total tackles (25 solo) and two interceptions as a UC Davis cornerback. He posted five solo tackles and had a dazzling 54-yard interception return against Illinois State University in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff quarterfinals for the Aggies (9-4). … Junior defensive lineman Avery Romain ’23 posted 11 tackles for Amherst, which finished 5-4. … Willis Johnson ’24 gained 49 yards on 14 carries as a sophomore running back for the University of Puget Sound.

Men’s Soccer

Sophomore Andre Gonzalez Lombera ’24 had five assists in 15 games for DeAnza, which finished 11-5-5 overall and advanced to the second round of the NorCal Regionals. … Owls teammate Alessandro Velazquez ’24 scored four goals, including an overtime winner in the first round of the NorCal Regionals.

Women’s Soccer

Four-year forward-midfielder Carolina Espinosa ’22 averaged 52 minutes per match, playing in all 18 games for Middlebury, which advanced to the NCAA Div. III Sweet 16 and finished ranked No. 12 in the nation.

Volleyball

Johns Hopkins outside hitter Simone Adam ’22 was named American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American and earned both Centennial Conference and AVCA Regional Player of the Year. The senior led the Blue Jays with 3.58 kills per set and 380 total kills and ranks second in program history with 1,482 career kills. She also contributed 27 aces, 293 digs (2.76 per set), and 59 blocks as Johns Hopkins advanced to the NCAA Div. III Sweet 16. Adam is a three-time all-AVCA honoree. … Skidmore senior middle hitter Jazlin Chen ’22 earned All-Liberty League Second-Team honors in each of the past two years and wraps up her career as an honorable mention selection. She had 166 kills with a team-best .317 attack percentage. Defensively, she led the team with 23 solo blocks and had 61 overall in 24 matches.

… Boston College senior setter Hanna Hoffman ’22 totaled 119 assists at 2.83 per set, nine aces, and 55 digs in 18 matches for the Eagles, which finished 16-16. She had two double-doubles this season with 21 assists and 11 digs against Bryant and a 16-assist, 13-dig outing against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia to wrap up her four-year career.

… Senior defensive specialist Kami Israelski ’22 finished her four-year career with 26 aces and 363 digs in 64 matches for Williams, which went 19-8 this past season.

… Alli McKenney ’22 posted 155 digs, 42 assists, and 14 aces for No. 7-ranked Colby, which matched its best finish in history, winning the regional and advancing to the NCAA Div. III Championships Elite Eight. The libero and defensive specialist wrapped up her four-year career with 570 digs, 64 aces, and 66 assists in 93 matches. …

… Sophomore middle blocker Logan Wilson ’24 totaled 98 kills, 25 aces, 56 digs, and 54 blocks in 24 starts for Wellesley (11-14). … Lily Kautai ’25 led Redlands with 321 kills and 52 aces in her collegiate debut season. She was second on the team with 349 digs. Her 321 kills are fifth most in single-season program history and her 52 aces ranks third.

Men’s Water Polo

Zayd Mahmoud ’21 wrapped up his senior season at UC Irvine and anchored the water polo team with 384 career saves and a 24-18 record. … Bucknell senior Jack Murad ’22 closed his four-year career, scoring in a 14-12 overtime victory over Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) in the fifth-place game of the conference championships. Murad finished his senior year with 39 goals, eight assists, and 16 steals.

… Ethan Babel ’23 amassed 10 goals and 20 assists in 21 games as a junior attack for Johns Hopkins. … Jackson Kay ’23 posted 15 goals and 10 assists, playing 29 games as a junior utility for MIT (8-22).

… UC Davis sophomore Tommy Kiesling ’23, an All-Big West First-Team selection, landed on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-American Team, making the list as a third-teamer. He led the team in goals (63) and total points (75) and picked up 15 steals and had seven field blocks for UCD, which went 15-13 and advanced to the NCAA Championships.
